作者:Jerry Spinelli(纽伯瑞金奖作家,《Maniac Magee》《失败者》作者),2012年出版,中级青少年现实成长小说,交替双视角叙事(Jake、Lily轮流讲述章节)。
1. Jake(哥哥,11分钟年长)
2. Lily(妹妹)
3. Poppy(外公)
4. Bump Stubbins
5. Ernie
2. Growing apart:
3. Peer Pressure
4. Sibling bond
5. Bullying
Jake and Lily
Today I’d like to share a warm and thoughtful middle-grade novel, Jake and Lily, written by Newbery Medal winner Jerry Spinelli. This book tells a touching story of twin siblings, exploring growth, friendship, identity and what real connection means.
Jake and Lily are twin brother and sister. They were born on a cross-country train, only eleven minutes apart. Since they were little, they share a mysterious special bond they call “Goombla”. With Goombla, they can sense each other’s feelings and danger. They can never play hide-and-seek, for they always know where the other hides. Every year on their birthday, they sleepwalk and wake up hand-in-hand on the train station platform. They truly believe they are two halves of one single whole, and nothing can separate them.
Everything changes the summer they turn eleven. Their parents decide they should sleep in separate bedrooms. Jake begins to want more time with other boys in the neighborhood. He meets Bump Stubbins, the local bully, and joins his group called “Death Rays”. Gradually, Jake spends less and less time with Lily.
Lily is heartbroken and terrified. She worries their Goombla is fading away. She keeps asking herself a painful question: Who am I, if I am no longer always with Jake? She feels abandoned and lonely. Luckily, her wise grandfather Poppy stays by her side. He teaches her an important truth: close people do not have to stay together every minute. True connection still exists, even when people walk separate roads.
Meanwhile, Jake faces a hard struggle. Bump and his friends enjoy teasing kids who look different. They call those quiet, unusual children “goobers”. Their main target is a gentle boy named Ernie. Jake wants to fit in with the group, yet deep inside he knows bullying others is wrong. He has to make a difficult choice: follow the crowd, or stick to what he believes is right.
As the summer goes on, both twins slowly grow. Lily stops clinging to the old days. She starts to discover hobbies and enjoy life without always depending on her brother. After inner struggle, Jake finally chooses kindness. He refuses to join in mocking Ernie.
At the end of the story, Jake and Lily are not inseparable anymore. They have different friends and different daily lives. But they realize something precious: growing apart does not mean growing away from each other. Their special Goombla does not disappear. It changes into a softer, quieter bond.
This book brings us many meaningful lessons. First, we should find our own identity instead of living in someone else’s shadow. Second, never give up your morals just to be accepted by a group. Most importantly, love and connection do not require people to stay side by side forever. Space and independence can make relationships stronger.
It is a wonderful story for every young teenager who faces changes in family and friendship.
