1. Privacy & inner boundary
2. Truth vs kindness
3. Appearance vs inner thoughts
4. Friendship & romantic crush
5. The danger of knowing everything:
Don’t Even Think About It
Good morning respected teachers and dear classmates.
Today I’d love to introduce a funny and thoughtful young adult novel, Don’t Even Think About It, written by best-selling author Sarah Mlynowski. This fantasy school story talks about secrets, friendship, romance and the important boundary between people’s public words and private thoughts.
The story takes place in a high school in New York City. All sophomores from homeroom 10B go to get routine flu shots. They only expect small side effects: a sore arm or a light headache. No one prepares themselves for something unbelievable. After the injection, every student in this class suddenly develops telepathy. They gain the strange power to hear everyone’s unfiltered inner thoughts.
At first, they feel excited and lucky. With this special ability, they can easily know what their classmates, teachers and family truly think. They can guess the feelings of their crushes. They can even listen to top students’ minds during exams. It seems like a perfect superpower that brings countless advantages.
However, excitement quickly turns into trouble and pain. Human minds are full of messy, raw thoughts that people never dare to speak out. Many hidden secrets float to the surface. Mackenzie, one popular girl, fears her secret summer fling will be heard by her boyfriend Cooper. Tess, our main character, constantly struggles after hearing her best friend Teddy’s real inner feelings. Jealousy, criticism and hidden dislike that people hide behind polite smiles cannot stay hidden any longer.
The students slowly realize a cruel truth: spoken words can be gentle and considerate, but inner thoughts are direct, sharp and often hurtful. Knowing every secret makes trust break easily. Arguments spread, friendships become tense, and romantic relationships face huge risks. Worse still, Cooper is the last person in class to unlock telepathy. When all secrets rush into his mind at once, he suffers a heavy blow.
Now all teenagers in 10B have to face a serious question: Is it really good to know every single thought of the people around us? Can human relationships survive without any private inner space?
Through funny and dramatic events, the book shares a meaningful lesson. Every person deserves private mental space. We do not have the right to peek into others’ minds. Not every truth needs to be exposed immediately. Politeness, silence and proper distance help us get along peacefully. The kindness between people relies on respect for each other’s hidden thoughts.
This light teen novel is far more than a fun fantasy story. It invites us to reflect on communication: we should judge people by what they choose to say and do, instead of imagining all their hidden minds. It teaches us to treasure privacy and be careful with secrets.
If you enjoy school stories mixed with small fantasy surprises and deep questions about relationships, this book will be a great choice.
