写作画风:叙事朴素真实,第一人称视角,大量心理描写,夹杂时代社会风貌,没有童话式圆满结局,成长是学会与自身缺陷共存。
Today I’m going to share Paperboy, written by Vince Vawter. This is a semi‑autobiographical story set in Memphis, Tennessee, in 1959.
The main character is eleven‑year‑old Victor. People call him Little Man. Victor has a serious stutter. Speaking out loud is painful and scary for him. He hates talking in front of others, because his stutter makes him feel ashamed and embarrassed. He is terrified of being laughed at.
One summer, his best friend gets badly hurt and breaks his arm. Victor has to take over his friend’s paper‑delivery job for the whole summer. He becomes a paperboy.
Every morning, he carries heavy yellow newspaper bags and walks from house to house. This job forces him into a world full of strangers. He must knock on doors, talk to different people, and collect money for newspapers. Every simple conversation becomes a hard battle for the stuttering boy.
During those long summer days, he meets many complicated people. He meets Rat, a rough‑mouthed wild boy from the street. At first they fight, but slowly they build a loyal friendship. He also meets Ara T. Hayes, a dangerous, angry homeless man, who fills Little Man with fear.
Luckily, he gets to know Mr. Spiro, a quiet, wise old man. Mr. Spiro does not judge him for stuttering. He tells Victor that speech is more than smooth, perfect words. Bravery matters far more than speaking flawlessly. You do not have to be perfect to be worthy.
Little Man goes through frightening moments, quarrels, warm talks and painful humiliation. He faces danger and learns about kindness and cruelty in the adult world.
When the summer finally ends, Victor’s friend recovers and comes back. Victor still stutters. His speech is not fixed by magic. But something inside him has changed. He is no longer running away from his weakness. He has found courage to face who he really is.
This book tells us: growth does not mean getting rid of all your flaws. It means learning to live with them bravely.
