This story takes place at Mica High School in Arizona. Most teenagers here care a lot about fitting in. They follow the same fashion, share similar hobbies, and try not to draw too much attention to themselves. Standing out is seen as strange and risky. Everyone wants to be accepted by their classmates.
Then a new transfer student shows up. Her name is Stargirl Caraway.
Stargirl is totally different from other kids. She wears old‑fashioned long dresses and always carries a ukulele. On other students’ birthdays, she walks through the busy lunchroom and sings birthday songs out loud for them. During basketball games, she cheers for both teams, not only for her own school. She leaves small, kind gifts for strangers. She notices beauty in tiny, ordinary things that most people ignore.
Leo Borlock is an average boy at this high school. All he hopes for is to belong to the group. But he cannot help being drawn to Stargirl’s free, bright spirit. Soon they become close and fall in love.
However, being different has a cost. Gradually, the rest of the school turns against Stargirl. Her special behaviour makes other students uncomfortable. They think she is too weird. They give her the cold shoulder in hallways. Even when she joins an important public‑speaking competition, the audience stays silent and refuses to applaud for her.
Leo suffers from huge peer pressure. He truly cares about Stargirl, yet he also fears being rejected by his classmates. He begs Stargirl to change, to act like everybody else.
For a while, Stargirl gives in. She calls herself Susan. She dresses and talks just like other teenage girls. She puts away her ukulele and abandons all her little unique habits. But pretending to be someone else makes her deeply unhappy. She loses the warm light inside her heart.
Before long, Stargirl realises she cannot keep living a lie. She chooses to go back to being Stargirl, no matter what others think of her.
The gap between her and the school becomes impossible to fix. When the school year ends, Stargirl and her family move away quietly, without a proper goodbye. Leo never sees her again.
Many years pass. Leo grows into an adult. He still keeps Stargirl in his memory. At last, he understands the great lesson she brought him. You do not need to copy others to prove your worth. It is brave to stay true to yourself. Real kindness expects nothing in return. One special soul can change the way you see the whole world.
