The Fault in Our Stars
Today I’d like to share a touching coming-of-age novel written by John Green, The Fault in Our Stars. The title comes from Shakespeare. It reminds us that fate does not decide everything, and our choices shape who we are.
The story is told from the eyes of sixteen-year-old Hazel Grace Lancaster. She suffers from terminal thyroid cancer which has spread to her lungs. She must carry an oxygen tank wherever she goes. Hazel sees herself as a grenade. She is afraid of building close relationships, because she knows one day she will pass away and leave endless sadness to everyone she loves.
Her life changes when she attends a cancer support group. There she meets Augustus Waters, a humorous seventeen-year-old boy. He once fought bone cancer and lost one leg. Gus is charming, witty, and fascinated by metaphors. He always keeps an unlit cigarette between his teeth. To him, the killing thing stays in his mouth, but never gains the power to hurt him.
They quickly become close friends. Hazel’s favorite book is An Imperial Affliction. She is desperate to learn what happens to the characters after the story ends. To fulfill Hazel’s wish, Augustus uses his one official wish and takes her to Amsterdam to meet the book’s author, Peter Van Houten.
The trip to Amsterdam turns into a sweet romantic journey. They fall in love. However, beautiful moments do not last long. At the end of the trip, Augustus tells Hazel the terrible truth: his cancer has returned and spread all over his body. There is no cure.
From then on, Hazel accompanies Gus through his hardest days. Day by day, Gus becomes weaker. He gradually loses the ability to walk, eat and take care of himself. Eventually, Augustus passes away.
After his death, Hazel sinks into grief. Slowly, she understands the most important lesson from their story.
One famous line in the book says: “Some infinities are bigger than other infinities.” Life may be short, but the time they spent together creates a small, precious infinity. Augustus gave her forever within their numbered days.
Many people think this novel is only a sad love story about sick teenagers. Actually, it talks about deeper questions: What is the meaning of life if everyone will die? Is it worthwhile to love someone when separation is unavoidable? Another classic sentence reminds us: Pain demands to be felt. We cannot run away from suffering, but we can choose how we face it.
This book does not offer easy happy endings. Yet it fills readers with warmth. It teaches us: we cannot choose whether we get hurt, but we can choose who gets the chance to hurt us. Short life does not equal meaningless life. Every sincere love and every genuine moment deserves to be treasured.
