Women in Science
Today I would like to introduce an inspiring illustrated biography book, Women in Science: 50 Fearless Pioneers Who Changed the World, written and drawn by Rachel Ignotofsky.
For a very long time, most science textbooks mainly record great male scientists. Plenty of brilliant women who devoted their lives to research have been ignored by history. Their important discoveries were forgotten, or even claimed by others. This wonderful book changes that situation. It collects the life stories of fifty outstanding female pioneers from different centuries, working in astronomy, medicine, biology, physics, paleontology, engineering and many other scientific fields.
The book introduces many well-known and unfamiliar names. We meet Marie Curie, the first person with two Nobel Prizes in different sciences. We learn about Rosalind Franklin, whose X-ray photographs unlocked the secret structure of DNA. We read about Katherine Johnson, the brilliant Black mathematician who calculated flight routes for NASA space missions. This book delivers two powerful messages. First, talent has no gender or race. The ability to explore science belongs to everyone. Second, history needs to be complete. We must recognize hidden heroes who shaped modern science, so more young girls dare to dream of becoming scientists.
